Musical Monday: Kelis

She's been on this blog before, with the first song I recall she ever released: Caught Out There, which is bold and beautiful. More known maybe Milkshake "My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard, damn right, it's better than yours"  may be better known. Her music mostly is as strange, just like her haircolor. And as you know me, this is something I like about her. Though, her upbeat songs that bring up my mood are even better.

Kelis Rogers was born august 21st 1979 in New York City's Harlem. As a child she sung in the church choir and she learned how to play the violin, saxophone and piano. When 16 her parents kicked her out of the house, because of her bad behavior, so she had to take care of herself. She had a bartending job, worked in a clothing store and sometimes had to steal to pay for everything she needed. She did manage to become a professional chef. Later she was introduced to the Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo) with whom she became friends. They helped her get a record deal.

Her first four albums were all RnB and Hiphop, yet in 2010 she made a switch to dance, under the watching eye of will.i.am music group. For her album Flesh Tone she collaborated with various names like Jean Baptiste, will.i.am and David Guetta.

I find Kelis' music, in both of her styles new, refreshing, very good and underrated.
